Passive Probes

Passive probes are the standard oscilloscope accessory, using a resistive divider network with no active electronics to attenuate the signal before it reaches the input.

Pico Technology, Tektronix and Keysight cover this range. Bandwidth is the specification that catches people out, because the probe and the oscilloscope form one system and the lower of the two figures governs: a 200 MHz scope with a 100 MHz probe is a 100 MHz instrument. Attenuation ratio trades signal amplitude against loading, with 10:1 the usual compromise. Compensation should be adjusted whenever a probe is moved between channels, and ground lead length directly affects what high frequency detail survives.
