Laboratory equipment in this section covers the workhorses of sample preparation and storage: autoclaves and sterilizers, centrifuges, incubators, temperature baths and chillers, shakers and stirrers, evaporators and concentrators, refrigerators and freezers, and PCR workstations.

Yamato, Benchmark Scientific, Hermle and Ohaus make up most of the range. Chamber or rotor capacity is the obvious specification, but the constraints that catch people out are usually the utilities and the room. Autoclaves differ in whether they need a plumbed water supply and floor drain. Centrifuges are specified by g-force rather than rpm, and the same rotor speed produces very different g-force depending on rotor radius, so quoting the required g-force avoids a mismatch. Incubators and baths differ in temperature uniformity across the chamber, which matters more than the setpoint range for most protocols.
