A turbine meter suited to clean diesel will not survive slurry or high-viscosity oil, and a meter calibrated for water will read incorrectly on any fluid with a different density or viscosity unless it is compensated. Line size and the available straight pipe run upstream and downstream come next, since most inferential meters assume a developed flow profile and will read low or unstably if installed immediately after an elbow or valve.
