Clamp meters measure current without breaking the circuit, closing a jaw around a conductor and reading the field it produces.
Fluke, Megger, Amprobe and Extech cover this range. The first distinction is AC-only against AC/DC, because a current transformer jaw cannot read DC and only a Hall effect clamp will. True RMS measurement is essential on any modern installation, since non-linear loads make an averaging meter read low. Jaw opening is a practical constraint that is easy to overlook, as a clamp that will not close around a large cable or busbar is useless regardless of its specification. Check the safety category rating for the circuits involved.
