Cable tracers and locators find the route and depth of a buried or concealed conductor, and identify which cable in a bundle is which, without disturbing the installation.

A transmitter injects a signal onto the target conductor and a receiver follows it, so the important practical questions are whether the cable can be energised or must be traced passively, and whether it is live at the time. Depth estimation and a fault-finding mode for sheath damage separate utility-grade sets from simple tone tracers. Confirm the depth range and whether the set works on non-metallic pipe.
