Field communicators configure, calibrate and troubleshoot smart field instruments by talking to them over their digital protocol rather than through a control room.

Emerson and Endress+Hauser cover this range. The deciding specification is protocol support, since a HART-only unit cannot commission a FOUNDATION Fieldbus or PROFIBUS device, and multi-protocol units cost more but avoid carrying two tools. Confirm the hazardous area certification you need, because most of this work happens in classified areas and an uncertified handheld cannot legally be taken there. Check that the device description library covers the instrument makes on your site, as an unsupported device can only be configured generically.
