Four-wire platinum resistance thermometers remove lead resistance from the measurement and are what you need for calibration work, while three-wire and two-wire designs are adequate for process indication. Match the sheath diameter and immersion depth to the thermowell you are using, since insufficient immersion produces a stem conduction error that no amount of instrument accuracy will correct.
