IR Thermometers
Infrared thermometers read surface temperature from a distance by measuring emitted radiation, giving an instant reading with no contact.
Newport, Extech, Wahl and Raytek cover this range. Two specifications determine whether a reading is trustworthy. Distance-to-spot ratio sets the size of the area being averaged, and a wide ratio means you may be measuring the surroundings as well as the target. Emissivity, whether fixed or adjustable, corrects for how efficiently the surface radiates, and a shiny metal surface read at a default emissivity will report far too low. Adjustable emissivity is worth having for anything other than matte painted surfaces.
The Newport Electronics OS551A-V1-4 infrared thermometer offers a -10 to 750°F (-23 to 400°C) temperature range with a 0-5 VDC output. It features visual and audible alarms, fast 100 msec response, and RS232 communication, making it ideal for industrial temperature monitoring.
The Extech HD500-NIST is a professional IR thermometer with NIST certification, offering non-contact temperature measurement up to 932°F (500°C) with a 30:1 distance-to-target ratio.
