Analytical balances read to 0.1 mg or finer and are used where the mass value itself is the result: gravimetric preparation, moisture determination, filter weighing and reference standard work.

Sartorius, Mettler Toledo, Radwag, Ohaus, Adam Equipment and Precisa cover this range. At this resolution the installation matters as much as the instrument. A balance reading to 0.01 mg will respond to a draught from a door, to vibration through the bench, to a temperature gradient across the weighing chamber and to static on a plastic sample vessel. A stable bench away from air handling outlets, an ioniser for static-prone samples and a suitable draught shield are often the difference between the specified performance and a reading that will not settle.
